Laundry Care Symbols Guide: What Every Symbol Means

Those tiny symbols on your clothing labels are trying to tell you something important. Here is how to decode all of them.

Why Care Labels Matter

Every piece of clothing you own has a care label sewn inside, usually at the collar or side seam. Those labels contain small symbols that tell you exactly how to wash, dry, iron, and bleach the garment without damaging it.

Most people ignore them. Then they shrink a sweater, fade a dress, or melt a synthetic fabric in the dryer. Care labels exist to prevent exactly these disasters.

Once you learn the basic symbol system, reading a care label takes about two seconds. Let us break it down.

The Five Symbol Categories

Every care label uses symbols from five categories. Each category has a base symbol with variations that indicate specific instructions.

  1. Washing (washtub icon)
  2. Bleaching (triangle icon)
  3. Drying (square icon)
  4. Ironing (iron icon)
  5. Professional care (circle icon)

Washing Symbols

The washing symbol is a washtub (a bucket shape with a wavy line on top representing water).

Basic washtub -- Machine wash. Safe for your washing machine.

Washtub with one dot -- Machine wash cold (up to 30C / 85F). Use for delicates and dark colors that might bleed.

Washtub with two dots -- Machine wash warm (up to 40C / 105F). The most common setting for everyday clothes.

Washtub with three dots -- Machine wash hot (up to 50C / 120F). Good for whites, towels, and heavily soiled items.

Washtub with four dots -- Machine wash very hot (up to 60C / 140F). Typically for cotton whites and sturdy fabrics.

Washtub with one line underneath -- Permanent press / gentle cycle. Use the medium or gentle cycle on your washer. Reduces agitation to prevent wrinkling or stretching.

Washtub with two lines underneath -- Delicate / gentle cycle. Use the gentlest cycle available. For fragile fabrics that need minimal agitation.

Hand in washtub -- Hand wash only. Do not machine wash. Fill a basin with cool water, add detergent, gently agitate by hand, and rinse.

Washtub with X through it -- Do not wash. The garment cannot be washed with water. It needs professional dry cleaning.

Bleaching Symbols

The bleaching symbol is a triangle.

Empty triangle -- Any bleach is safe. You can use chlorine bleach or oxygen bleach.

Triangle with two diagonal lines -- Non-chlorine bleach only. Use oxygen-based bleach (like OxiClean). Do not use chlorine bleach (like regular Clorox).

Solid triangle with X through it -- Do not bleach. No bleach of any kind.

Drying Symbols

The drying symbol is a square. Within that square, different markings tell you how to dry the garment.

Tumble Dry (Machine Dryer)

Square with circle inside -- Tumble dry allowed. Safe for the dryer.

Square with circle and one dot -- Tumble dry low heat. Use the low or delicate setting.

Square with circle and two dots -- Tumble dry medium heat. The normal/medium setting.

Square with circle and three dots -- Tumble dry high heat. For sturdy fabrics like cotton towels and jeans.

Square with circle and X through it -- Do not tumble dry. Air dry only.

Air Dry

Square with one vertical line inside -- Hang to dry. Use a clothesline or hanger.

Square with one horizontal line inside -- Dry flat. Lay the garment flat on a clean surface. Common for sweaters and knits that would stretch on a hanger.

Square with curved line in upper corner -- Drip dry. Hang while still dripping wet, do not wring or squeeze.

Ironing Symbols

The ironing symbol is shaped like an old-fashioned clothes iron.

Iron with one dot -- Iron on low heat (up to 110C / 230F). For synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon, and acrylic.

Iron with two dots -- Iron on medium heat (up to 150C / 300F). For silk and wool.

Iron with three dots -- Iron on high heat (up to 200C / 390F). For cotton and linen.

Iron with X through it -- Do not iron. The fabric will be damaged by heat from an iron.

Iron with X under it (steam lines crossed out) -- Do not steam. Iron without steam, or the fabric may be damaged by moisture.

Professional Care Symbols

The professional care symbol is a circle. These tell dry cleaners what solvents and methods are safe.

Circle with letter P -- Dry clean with any solvent except trichloroethylene.

Circle with letter F -- Dry clean with petroleum solvent only.

Circle with letter W -- Professional wet clean.

Circle with X through it -- Do not dry clean.

Most people do not need to memorize the professional care letters. If you see a circle, it means professional cleaning is recommended. Bring it to a dry cleaner and they will know what to do.

The Most Important Symbols to Know

If you only memorize five things from this guide, make it these:

  1. Hand in washtub = hand wash only (no machine)
  2. Washtub with X = do not wash with water (dry clean only)
  3. Square with circle and X = do not put in the dryer
  4. Triangle with X = no bleach
  5. Dots = temperature (more dots = higher heat, everywhere)

These five symbols prevent the most common laundry disasters: shrinking, stretching, color damage, and melting.

Common Mistakes from Ignoring Care Labels

Shrinking a wool sweater -- Wool needs cold water and either hand washing or a gentle cycle. Hot water and regular agitation cause wool fibers to felt and shrink permanently.

Melting a polyester blend in the dryer -- Some synthetics cannot handle high dryer heat. They come out warped, stiff, or with a shiny surface. Check for the tumble dry low symbol.

Fading dark jeans -- Jeans should be washed cold and inside out. The cold water symbol (one dot) is your friend here.

Ruining a silk blouse -- Silk is almost always hand wash or dry clean only. Machine washing silk, even on gentle, risks permanent damage.

Stretching a knit sweater on a hanger -- If the label says dry flat, it means the fabric will stretch under its own weight when hung. Lay it flat to dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the dots mean on laundry care symbols?
Dots indicate temperature. One dot means low heat, two dots mean medium heat, and three dots mean high heat. This applies to washing symbols (water temperature), drying symbols (dryer heat), and ironing symbols (iron temperature).
What does the hand in a washtub symbol mean?
A hand inside the washtub symbol means hand wash only. Do not machine wash the garment. Instead, fill a basin with cool water, add detergent, gently agitate by hand, and rinse thoroughly.
What does the X through a triangle mean on clothing?
A triangle with an X through it means do not bleach. No chlorine bleach or oxygen bleach should be used on that garment. A triangle with two diagonal lines means non-chlorine bleach only is safe.
What does the square with a circle mean on a care label?
A square with a circle inside means tumble dry is allowed. Dots inside the circle indicate heat level: one dot for low, two dots for medium, three dots for high. An X through this symbol means do not tumble dry.
Should I follow laundry care labels or can I ignore them?
Follow them. Care labels tell you the maximum safe treatment for a garment. Ignoring them risks shrinking, stretching, fading, or permanently damaging the fabric. When in doubt, wash cold on a gentle cycle and air dry -- or bring the item to a professional laundry service.
